Short answer
Does Kill Bill work with Avalara?
Yes. The AvaTax plugin sends each invoice's line items and the customer's address to Avalara AvaTax when the invoice is generated. Avalara returns the sales tax, and Kill Bill adds it as TAX lines next to the items they apply to. Tax codes, exemptions and dry-run previews are handled in Kill Bill. Kill Bill does not file tax returns.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kill Bill integrate with Avalara?
Yes. The open source AvaTax plugin, maintained by the Kill Bill team under the Apache 2.0 license, sends invoice line items to Avalara AvaTax when an invoice is generated, and adds the returned tax as TAX lines on the Kill Bill invoice.
Which taxes does the AvaTax plugin calculate?
Sales tax, delegated to Avalara AvaTax. The plugin returns tax by state, county and city, using the address on the Kill Bill account. An active Avalara account is required.
How do I map products to Avalara tax codes?
Store a tax code for each catalog product with the plugin's tax code API, set a taxCode custom field on an invoice item, or pass the tax code as a plugin property. Products with different tax codes are taxed differently.
Can some customers be tax exempt?
Yes. Set the customerUsageType custom field on the Kill Bill account, with the Avalara entity use code that applies, for example E for charitable organizations. Tax calculation can also be skipped for an account at runtime.
Can I preview the tax before an invoice is issued?
Yes. Dry-run invoices include a preview of the tax lines, and the matching document is not committed to Avalara.
Are invoices committed to Avalara?
Only if you turn on the commitDocuments option. The plugin also offers pass-through APIs to retrieve, commit and void documents. Documents are not voided automatically, because that depends on your dunning rules.
Should I use AvaTax or Aviate Tax?
AvaTax suits US sales tax by state, county and city, with an Avalara account. Aviate Tax, part of Aviate, applies VAT or GST rates you set per product and country, without a third-party engine. It works at country level.
Does the AvaTax plugin cost anything?
The plugin is open source and free. You need your own Avalara account, under Avalara's terms.
