Twelve Ways to Charge, Explained Simply

Each model comes with an everyday comparison and the invoice the customer would receive.

2Kill Bill open source

A one-time fee, then a monthly price

Also called: Setup fee plus recurring price

The first invoice adds a one-time fee to the monthly price. After that, only the monthly price is billed.

In Kill Bill terms: A fixed price and a recurring price on the same phase.

Fixed and recurring example →
First invoice
Setup fee$50
Monthly plan$25

Every month after
Monthly plan$25
Total$25
3Kill Bill open source

Free trial, then a launch price, then the full price

Also called: Plan phases

A plan is a sequence of steps, each with its own length and price. Kill Bill moves each customer to the next step on the right date, with no manual work.

In Kill Bill terms: Phases of type TRIAL, DISCOUNT, FIXEDTERM and EVERGREEN.

Phases example →
Free trial30 days, $0
Launch price3 months at $5
Regular price$25 a month

The plan moves to the next step on its own.

4Kill Bill open source

Each band of usage has its own price

Also called: Graduated tiers

The first units are billed at the first price, the next units at the next price, and so on. Here: the first 1,000 messages at $0.10, the rest at $0.05.

In Kill Bill terms: A consumable usage section with the ALL_TIERS policy.

Graduated example →
1,500 messages, graduated
1,000 x $0.10= $100
500 x $0.05= $25
Total: $125
Each band of messages has its own price.
5Kill Bill open source

Use more, and every unit gets the lower price

Also called: Volume tiers

The level reached at the end of the month sets one price for all units. Same prices as above, but 1,500 messages are all billed at $0.05.

In Kill Bill terms: The same tiers with the TOP_TIER policy.

Volume example →
1,500 messages, volume
1,500 x $0.05= $75
Total: $75
Past 1,000, every message gets the lower price.
6Kill Bill open source

Pay for the size you needed at your busiest

Also called: Capacity or peak pricing

Kill Bill looks at the highest value of the month, such as the most users at the same time, and bills the matching package. Here the peak was 32 users, so the 11 to 50 package applies.

In Kill Bill terms: A capacity usage section: the peak value picks the tier, each tier has a flat price.

Capacity example →
Busiest day this month: 32 users
Up to 10 users$100
11 to 50 users$300
51 to 200 users$900
7Kill Bill open source

A base fee plus what you use

Also called: Hybrid pricing

A fixed monthly fee and a usage charge on the same invoice. The fee stays the same, the usage part changes with consumption.

In Kill Bill terms: A recurring price and one or more usage sections on the same plan.

Base plus usage example →
This month
Platform fee$30
400 minutes x $0.10$40
Total$70
Next month, the fee stays and the minutes change.

Options on top of a plan

Also called: Add-ons

Each option has its own price and is billed on the same invoice as the main plan. Options can start, change and stop on their own.

In Kill Bill terms: Add-on products attached to a base plan.

Add-on example →
This month
Standard plan$25
Add-on: extra storage$5
Add-on: priority support$10
Total$40
9Aviate

Pay per use, counted event by event

Also called: Usage metering, AI tokens

Your application sends each event as it happens: tokens, API calls, minutes. Aviate adds them up for the month and the invoice applies the price, here $2 per million tokens. Sending the same event twice does not bill it twice.

In Kill Bill terms: Aviate Metering: billing meters with SUM, MAX, COUNT, LATEST or UNIQUE_COUNT. Kill Bill open source takes totals you add up yourself.

Metering guide →
Events from your app

+ 3,000,000 tokens
and more, one by one

Prepaid credit

Also called: Prepaid credits with top-off

The customer pays in advance and usage draws down the balance. When it falls below a threshold, Aviate refills it automatically and charges the customer. Credits can be free or paid, and can expire.

In Kill Bill terms: Aviate Wallet: free and paid credits, top-off to a fixed amount or a target balance, expiration and a ledger.

Also called: Coupons

A code gives a fixed amount or a percentage off. It can be limited to some plans, a number of uses or a date, and shows as a negative line on the invoice.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What pricing models does Kill Bill support?
Kill Bill open source bills a fixed price every period, one-time fees, free trials and launch prices, graduated and volume usage tiers, capacity pricing based on the busiest moment of the month, a base fee plus usage, and add-ons. Aviate adds usage counted event by event, prepaid credit, discount codes and, in Insider Preview, custom rating rules.
What is the difference between graduated and volume pricing?
With graduated pricing, each band of usage is billed at its own price, like tax brackets. With volume pricing, the level reached sets one price for every unit, like a bulk discount. At $0.10 a message up to 1,000 and $0.05 above, 1,500 messages cost $125 with graduated pricing and $75 with volume pricing.
Can Kill Bill bill usage in advance?
A fixed price can be billed at the start or at the end of the period. Usage is billed at the end of the period, from what was used. To get paid before usage, Aviate Wallet holds prepaid credit that usage draws down.
Can Kill Bill bill AI tokens?
Yes. Set a price per block of tokens, for example $2 per million. With Kill Bill open source, you send the totals. With Aviate Metering, you send each event and Aviate adds them up.
How do free trials work in Kill Bill?
A plan starts with a trial step with its own length, usually at no charge. On the right date, Kill Bill moves the customer to the next step, such as a launch price or the regular price.
Can we change prices without affecting existing customers?
Yes. The catalog keeps versions: a new price applies to new subscriptions, and existing customers keep their price unless you decide otherwise. In Aviate, editing a price in the catalog editor creates a new version of the plan.
Can one customer get a custom price?
Yes. Kill Bill supports a price override on a single subscription, so one customer can have a negotiated price without a new plan.
Which billing periods are available?
Daily, weekly, every two weeks, every 30 days, monthly, quarterly, twice a year, yearly and every two years, plus steps with no billing period, such as a free trial.
